2. Note : Sheet. A petition letter by 'Phan (la)-rya and Nya-brtsan to 'Phan-gzigs. An official square seal in vermilion ink is partly visible near the left edge. The first syllable in r1 ('byung) is apparently a later addition by a different hand, on which a round vermilion seal (i.e., a private seal) is affixed. The inverted line on recto, the beginning of another letter to 'Phan-gzigs, is crossed out. Three creases indicate that the letter was once folded into a long slip. V1 is the form of address of the recto letter. On verso there is another line written upside down by a different hand, on which one or two vermilion seals are affixed. V1(inv) suggests that this petition was used, after being endorsed and given an official seal, as a new copy of a decree given to the office of the general in Khotan, under whom the petitioners must have served as soldiers. It also indicates that the general, the head of the military district government in the Khotan area, resided not in M.Tāgh but in 'U-ten, i.e., Khotan. Recto, 7 lines and 1 inverted line with seals. Verso, 1 line and inverted line with seals.
